Texting for Help

The emergency call center located at the Black Hawk county jail in Waterloo, Iowa is the first in the country to accept text messages.  Emergency responders then may decide to respond to the text message through the computer interface or may elect to call the respondent directly.  Via the The Associated Press:  County Police Chief Thomas Jennings said ‘I think there’s a need to get out front and get this technology available.’ This is great news for victims who might struggle to communicate with emergency services due to pre-existing disabilities, e.g. the deaf community, and or situational circumstances related to the emergency itself.

I gave the Black Hawk County Police Department a call to find out more about the development of this service without much luck---Next time I’ll text.

Reader's Note: Here’s an interesting blip from National Public Radio on the service.
