Zap Mobile Commerce in Africa

The mobile commerce solution, ‘Zap’, will now be available in the African nations of Niger, Sierra Leone and Malawi, an expansion from a successful rollout of the service in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda earlier last year; with this most recent launch, the service will now serve 150 million people in six countries on the continent making Zain (the service’s telecommunications provider) the largest mobile commerce operator in the world with respect to geographic coverage, enabled customers and service functionalities. Perhaps, the Zap service is best distinguished from other mobile commerce platforms by its ‘One Network’ platform which allows Zap users to travel across geographic borders to other ‘One Network’ countries without incurring roaming coasts or surcharges; moreover, users can top up their card with locally purchased mobile credit cards. Like other mobile commerce solutions, Zap has made a big difference for individuals throughout Africa by allowing them to use their mobile phone to: withdraw cash, pay for goods and services, school fees, utility bills; send or receive remittances from friends and family; send and receive money from their bank accounts.
